چکیده

In many meta-heuristics greedy choices are performed and usually measured by means of an immediate gain eventually leading to suboptimal choices. Usually, the measure of this gain as well as a mechanism to guide the choices given the evaluations is performed rather shortsighted. Therefore, especially in the artificial intelligence community researchers have thought about looking ahead (see, e.g., [19]). In that sense a heuristic measure may incorporate intelligent mechanisms to evaluate certain decisions or moves not based on an immediate gain but on the outcome after, say, a few iterations. Recently, related approaches have come up that have applied this concept as meta-heuristics for combinatorial optimization problems [4, 7]. Here we highlight the pilot method of [6, 7] (where pilot may stand as an acronym for “Preferred Iterative LOok ahead Technique” or “Perform Improved Look-ahead with Objective-value Tests”) as a look ahead strategy and show that it may be seen as a meta-heuristic to guide subordinate heuristics for determining solutions of enhanced quality. The key approach within the pilot method is that of repetition. That is, once a single heuristic is known, it is repeated over and over again without solely restricting to greedy choices.

Two Look-Ahead Strategies for Local-Search Metaheuristics

The main principle of a look-ahead strategy is to inspect a few steps ahead before taking a decision on the direction to choose. We propose two original look-ahead strategies that differ in the object of inspection. The first method introduces a look-ahead mechanism at a superior level for selecting local-search operators. The second method uses a look-ahead strategy on a lower level in order t...

New algorithms for DNA sequencing by hybridization

The reconstruction of DNA sequences from DNA fragments is one of the most challenging problems in computational biology. In recent years the specific problem of DNA sequencing by hybridization has attracted quite a lot of interest in the optimization community. Despite the fact that well-working constructive heuristics are often the basis for well-working metaheuristics, only two constructive h...

Look-ahead techniques for fast beam search

In this paper, we present two efficient look-ahead pruning techniques in beam search for large vocabulary continuous speech recognition. Both techniques, the language model look-ahead and the phoneme look-ahead, are incorporated into the word conditioned search algorithm using a bigram language model and a lexical prefix tree [5]. The paper present the following novel contributions: We describe...

Speculative Parallelization in Decoupled Look-ahead Architectures

One well known approach to mitigate the impact of branch mispredictions and cache misses is to enable deep lookahead so as to overlap instruction and data supply with instruction processing. A continuous look-ahead process which uses separate thread of control on another hardware contexts is one such approach which we call decoupled look-ahead [1], [2]. However, in such look-ahead schemes, look...

Look-ahead Techniques for Improved Beam Search

This paper presents two look-ahead techniques for large vocabulary continuous speech recognition. These two techniques, which are referred to as language model look-ahead and phoneme look-ahead, are incorporated into the pruning process of the time-synchronous one-pass beam search algorithm. The search algorithm is based on a tree-organized pronunciation lexicon in connection with a bigram lang...
